Mykhailo Boichuk

1882 – 1937

From 1898 he studied at the painting school in Lviv, as well as in the studio of Y. Pankevych.

Supported by the T. Shevchenko Scientific Society, led by M. Hrushevskyi (since 1912 he became a member of the society), at the expense of ShSS and Metropolitan Andrei Sheptytskyi, he studied at the Vienna Academy of Arts, then – with Leon Vychulkovskyi in Krakiv.

One of the founders of monumental art of Ukraine of the XX century. Representative of the Shot Revival.

He was the main artist of the first season of the Young Theater (1917-1918). Significant productions: “Black Panther and Polar Bear” by V. Vynnychenko (1917, Young Theater, dir. L. Kurbas), “Yolia” by Y. Zhulavskyi (1918, dir. – L. Kurbas), where he used the principle of “stylization” under the Middle Ages. This production marked the arrival of three-dimensional architectural and picturesque scenery in the Ukrainian theater
